Periodicals: General Information
Locations (Periodicals are shelved by title):
Current Issues/Volumes 2nd Floor CURRENT PERIODICALS AREA
Bound Volumes/Back Issues 1st Floor BOUND PERIODICALS AREA
Microfilm/Microfiche 1st Floor MICROFORMS AREA
The most Current Issues/Volumes are on the 2nd Floor in the Current Periodicals Area. On the 2nd Floor, the latest issue is on display; previous issues are shelved underneath the display shelf. The libraries' collection of current newspapers and oversized periodicals can be found in the center area of the 2nd floor.
Bound Volumes/Back Issues are shelved at the back of the 1st Floor in the Bound Periodicals Area. For your convenience, the library keeps paper copies of the most recent 3 years of titles replaced by microfilm or microfiche or available online. The library also keeps the past 5-7 years of all JSTOR and Project Muse titles that the Libraries subscribe to in paper.
Microfilm/Microfiche is a low-cost, compact means of storing highly-used or hard-to-preserve periodicals. These are shelved in cabinets in the Microforms Area on the 1st Floor near the Periodicals Service Desk. Three micro-format reader/printers are available on the first floor near the microform cabinets. Copies are ten cents per page.
Indexes and Abstracts (to look up articles on a subject):
If you are looking up articles on a subject, you will need to use an online index or abstract to periodicals. UE Libraries offers access to online databases here.
Periodical Lists (once you have article references):
UE Libraries do not subscribe to all of the periodicals referred to in the indexes. Several of the electronic indexes show what the library has when the article citation is displayed/printed, but in most cases you will have to confirm that UE subscribes to a particular title. To confirm a subscription, please consult the following:
- ACE -- the online catalog contains the most complete and accurate information regarding the Libraries' periodicals.
- UE Libraries Journal List-- all of the full text journal titles that UE Libraries owns or has access to through various online databases are alphabetically listed here.
For Periodicals NOT Owned by the UE Libraries:
The various indexes will often cite articles not owned by the UE Libraries. For UE Students and Faculty, the Libraries will obtain copies of articles (and books as well) from other libraries. This Interlibrary Loan service is available at the Circulation Desk on the 1st Floor, and the articles are usually received in 7 to 10 days. There is no charge for the service, and you do NOT have to know what other library has a certain publication before ordering. Sorry, this service is not available to non-UE patrons.

Videos & DVDs
The Libraries' collection of videos and DVDs is housed on the first floor in closed stacks. For assistance, please go to the Periodicals Service Desk. Students and alumni may check videos and DVDs out overnight; faculty and administrators may check videos and DVDs out for five days. Videos and DVDs may also be placed on reserve by faculty. TV/VCR and TV/DVD players are available in the Periodicals Department for viewing in the library.

Use Policy & Nature of the Periodicals Collection
In order to provide consistently available access to information, periodicals DO NOT CIRCULATE. Library materials are a shared resource, and, to be fully utilized, periodicals must remain in the library at all times.
The UE Libraries' collection of periodicals is intended to support the research and educational needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the University of Evansville. For the most part, the publications are curriculum-based, academically-oriented, scholarly, professional, and/or trade journals. The general public is welcome to use any material from the Periodicals Collection within the library.
