Collection Development Manual

X. INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM AND CENSORSHIP

In accordance with the ALA Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement, as well as the ALA Resolution on the Use of Internet Filters statement, the University of Evansville Libraries has a duty to provide for the free exchange of ideas and to keep in its collection or provide access to a representative selection of materials on all subjects of use or interest to its users. The collection should be available to all potential patrons of the library and should offer the widest possible range of viewpoints. Material will not be excluded from the collection because of frankness of language or controversial approach or because of the political, moral, religious, sexual, social, economic, or scientific views expressed or because of the race or national origin, politics, or religion of the author. In keeping with this stance in regard to its collection, the library does not use content filters on its internet workstations.

When there is honest disagreement concerning the truth or wisdom of particular ideas, issues, or beliefs, and in the interest of reasonable economy, the library will attempt to see that the views of the best or major spokesmen are represented. A form is provided for a request for reconsideration of material (See Item 2). In handling criticism of material or attempts at censorship, the University Librarian will reply verbally or in writing to the person or group, quoting or referring to the above policy if appropriate. Persistent or repeated criticism from persons or groups will be referred to the Academic Services Committee.
