The Internet The Internet is a global network, connecting many smaller individual networks. Information travels through fiber optic cables and phone lines from one computer on the Internet to the next. For example, the computer stations in UE Libraries are connected to other computers on campus, across the state, and around the world. The Internet allows you to communicate with people, move files between computers, and find and share information. While a student at UE, you are likely to use: e-mail to communicate with people across the Internet Web to view viewing articles, opinions, stories, art, sounds, and animations stored on Web servers telnet to log into other computers such as databases and host computers FTP (file transfer protocol) to transfer files from one computer to another across the Internet |
