It has some issues, as I discovered when I did a search for I Dream of Jeannie and got pictures of folk I don't know when I was hoping for an image of Major Nelson and Jeannie. I then did a URL search for an image I found of the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring and got the results I wanted. But a keyword search yielded movie results and only two images of Vermeer's painting. Fun if you're terribly bored, or if you desperately need an image and aren't that particular about where it comes from, you can give GazoPa a try. You can also tweet from GazoPa, so feel free to annoy your friends with this app. :)

In much barely more relevant news, Google now has a list of magazines from Google Books. I searched for Swine Flu and got results from the BBC, Washington Post, and US Weekly. Boolean searching greatly diminishes the results you get, but typing anything in the search box yields numerous humorous results. Could be useful for getting news results from a variety of sources. Could also waste some time on a boring afternoon. ;)

Google Digitizes LIFE

Don't Panic! Now when you search in a book, little hints will appear in the margin to indicate where you results are located. When you hover over one of these annotations, you’ll get a quick preview of the search results and the option of jumping directly to the associated page.

Previously, it was difficult to get a feel for where results were located in a book. You could count the page numbers and make a guess, but that’s hardly efficient. Now there is a strong visual display of result locations, and often clusters will form around particular chapters or passages. This will help you navigate more easily between pages which contain your search term.

Source: Google Book Search Blog

AP unveils ‘treasure trove’ of historical footage

The Associated Press is digitizing and has begun to release a "treasure trove" of historical film footage from the 1960s and '70s that had been sitting in Gen. Some interesting quotes:

"According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled."

"Richard Jalichandra, chief executive of Technorati, said that at any given time there are 7 million to 10 million active blogs on the Internet, but “it’s probably between 50,000 and 100,000 blogs that are generating most of the page views.” He added, “There’s a joke within the blogging community that most blogs have an audience of one.”"

Google Squared

Just read about a new service called Google Squared being developed in Google Labs.
